How do I use tags in ContractHero?

The screenshots in this article show the German interface. The English label is given first, with the German label in square brackets.

Categories give your contracts their broad structure — tags are the fine, flexible layer on top of it. With tags you mark individual contracts with your own keywords, without making any changes to the field builder [Feldbaukasten].

You will find tags directly on the contract page, below "Category [Kategorie]" and "Status".

What's in it for you

  • Labelling without configuration. A new keyword is assigned in seconds — you do not have to create a new field or touch your contract structure.
  • As many tags per contract as you like. Unlike the category (one per contract), you can combine several tags — for example "project development" and "freelancer".
  • Consistency through reuse. As you assign tags, ContractHero suggests existing ones — so your tagging stays uniform.
  • Visible immediately. All tags appear as chips directly on the contract — anyone with access recognises the classification at a glance.

How it works

1. Open the contract and switch to edit mode

Open the contract you want and click "Edit [Bearbeiten]" at the top.

2. Add a tag

Click the ⊕ symbol next to the tags ("Add tags to the contract [Tags zum Vertrag hinzufügen]").

In the "Select or create a tag [Wählen oder Erstellen Sie einen Tag]" field, select an existing tag — or type a new term to create it.

3. Remove a tag

Click the × on the relevant tag chip to remove it from the contract.

4. Back to the view

Switch to "View [Einsehen]" — the tags appear as a row of chips directly below the contract's category and status.

Common questions

What is the difference between tags and categories?
The category is a contract's structural home: there is exactly one per contract, and fields and permissions are attached to it. Tags are free keywords — as many per contract as you like, with no effect on fields or access rights.

Who can assign tags?
Anyone who is allowed to edit the contract. Users with read-only access can see the tags but cannot change them.

Do I have to create tags somewhere first?
No. Tags come into being as you assign them — type a new term and it is created as a tag. Tags already in use are offered for selection.

How many tags can a contract have?
There is no practical limit — for the sake of clarity we recommend 3–5 meaningful tags per contract.

Good to know

  • Conventions pay off. Agree within your team how tagging is done (for example always lower case, always singular) — otherwise duplicates such as "Freelancer" and "freelancer" will appear.
  • Tags do not replace fields. For structured information you want to evaluate (cost centres, for example), the field builder [Feldbaukasten] is the better choice — tags are for quick, flexible labelling.
  • Tidying up is worthwhile. Remove tags that are no longer needed directly on the contract — that keeps your tagging meaningful.
