Contract AI assistant: ask your contract instead of searching it

The answer is in the contract — but where? On a thirty-page master agreement, “just checking quickly” means scrolling, searching and comparing passages. The contract assistant takes that off your hands: ask your question in plain language and get the answer along with the exact spot in the document. And when something has to follow from the answer — a termination letter, say — it drafts that for you too.

What's in it for you

  • Ask instead of search. Phrase the question the way you'd put it to a colleague — “Under what conditions can either party terminate?” is enough.
  • Answers with evidence. Anything drawn from the document is marked as a violet reference. One click jumps to that exact passage.
  • Not just answers, drafts too. Ask for a termination letter and the assistant writes one based on the notice periods and clauses in this particular contract.
  • Help with prompts. If the AI is not extracting a data field cleanly, ask the assistant on that contract to suggest a better prompt.
  • Honest answers. If the contract doesn't regulate something, the assistant says so rather than inventing a plausible-sounding answer.
  • It stays with the contract. No internet research, no outside sources — only what is in the contract and its metadata.
  • Your chats stay yours. Saved conversations belong to your user account. Neither colleagues nor your organisation's owner can see them.

Can't find the assistant? It is not enabled on every account. Talk to your Customer Success Manager or email us at support@contracthero.com — we'll look at what is possible for your account.

How it works

1. Open the assistant on a contract

Open a contract and switch to the Assistant („Assistent“) tab on the right — alongside Document, Summary, Tasks and Activity.
The panel opens with the heading “Ask AI” and the note that ContractHero AI works only with contract data and metadata.

2. Ask your question

The assistant greets you by name and offers five suggestions tailored to the contract you have open — payment terms, termination conditions, handling of personal data, limitation of liability, and the parties' main obligations.
Click a suggestion, or type your own question into the Ask a question („Frage stellen...“) field and confirm with Send („Senden“).

3. Watch it work

While the assistant is working you see what it is doing, with a running second counter — thinking, checking, investigating — along with steps such as querying the files and reading between the lines. No staring at an empty box.

4. Check the answer and jump to the source

The answer appears in the chat. Statements taken from the document carry a violet reference with an arrow icon at the end of the paragraph. Clicking it opens the contract document at that exact passage.
Where the assistant finds nothing, it says so explicitly — for example that no specific payment deadline, invoicing procedure or due date is regulated in the clauses it found.

5. Have it draft something

The assistant does more than answer questions — it will also write contract-related text for you. Just type what you need, for example “Write me a termination letter for this contract.”
It draws on the contract for the draft: term, end date, the termination clause and formal requirements such as written form. If an ordinary termination does not fit — because the term has already expired, say — it proposes the appropriate alternative and explains why. The clauses it used appear as violet references, as usual.
The draft appears in the chat. Sender, recipient, place, date and signature stay as placeholders in square brackets. Copy the text into your email or letter and fill those in.
At the end, the assistant flags anything you should check — for instance where a clause grants the right of termination only to the other party.

6. Keep asking, start over, or delete

Ask as many follow-ups as you like — the assistant knows the conversation so far. More actions („Weitere Aktionen“) at the top of the panel gives you New chat („Neuer Chat“) and Delete conversation („Konversation löschen“).

7. Find your conversations again

AI Chats („KI-Chats“) in the main menu on the left collects every saved conversation with the contract assistant, listing contract name, question and date, with a search box. Click one to reopen it.

Common questions

I can't see the Assistant tab — why not?

The contract assistant is not enabled on every account. If the tab is missing on your contracts, talk to your Customer Success Manager or email support@contracthero.com and we'll tell you what is possible for your account.

Can the assistant help me write a prompt?

Yes. When the AI leaves a data field empty or fills it incorrectly, ask the assistant on the contract where it is going wrong — for example: “What prompt do I need so the AI picks up the notice period from this contract?” Because it has the contract text in front of it, it can work from the document's actual wording.
Enter the suggestion under Settings → Field builder → Contract field builder on the field in question, and check it there with Test in a contract before putting it live. See How to write a prompt in ContractHero.

Can the assistant write a termination letter?

Yes. Just ask — “Write me a termination letter for this contract.” The draft is based on the notice periods and clauses of the contract you have open, and includes placeholders for sender, recipient, place and date. Copy the finished text from the chat into your email. ContractHero does not send the termination itself, nor does it automatically file it as a document on the contract.

Can the assistant answer questions across several contracts?

No. It always works with the contract you opened it on. For analysis across your whole portfolio, use the MCP interface.

How is this different from ContractHero MCP?

Both answer questions about your contracts, but in different places. The contract assistant runs inside ContractHero and works on the contract in front of you — no additional tool required. MCP connects your own AI assistant — Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini — to ContractHero and searches your entire portfolio. If you cannot or do not want to use external AI tools, the contract assistant is the one for you.

Can my colleagues see my chats?

No. Conversations are tied to your user account, and your organisation's owner has no access to them either.

Does the assistant search the internet?

No. It works exclusively with the data held in the contract and its metadata.

What happens if I ask something unrelated to the contract?

It declines and points you to support, explaining that as the ContractHero assistant it only helps with questions about your own data. Contract-related tasks — drafting a termination letter, suggesting a prompt — it does take on.

Does the assistant change anything in my contract?

No. It only reads. Fields, documents, tasks and status are untouched. A termination draft exists only in the chat.

Good to know

  • The reference is your check. For anything you pass on, click the violet source — you see the original wording in two seconds.
  • A draft stays a draft. On a termination letter, sender, recipient, place and date remain placeholders. Read the text through before you send it and fill in what is missing.
  • Test any suggested prompt. A prompt the assistant proposes is a starting point, not a verified result. Try it with Test in a contract on several contracts before it applies to all of them.
  • “Not regulated” is a result. When the assistant tells you the contract does not cover something, that is often more valuable than a number.
  • The suggested questions change. They follow the contract you have open — an NDA offers different ones than a lease.
  • One conversation belongs to one contract. For another contract, open the Assistant tab there; AI Chats brings them all together.
  • Information about the contract text, not legal advice. The assistant tells you what the contract says, and drafts on that basis. The legal assessment stays with you.
