How are notifications configured and managed?

The screenshots in this article show the German interface. Where a button or field matters, the German label is given in brackets so you can match text to screenshot.

Notifications in ContractHero are configured per user and per event, and you choose separately whether each one reaches you by email, inside the web application, or both. This article shows where the settings live, which events you can switch on, and how to keep the volume sensible.

What's in it for you

With well-configured notifications you never miss a critical step on a contract — while still avoiding a flooded inbox. Let through only the events that match how you actually work, and you keep your focus and spot important deadlines, approval requests or failed signature runs straight away.

How it works

1. Open the notification settings

Click your name (or your profile picture) at the top right.

In the dropdown, choose "Notifications" [Benachrichtigungen] — it sits between "Profile" [Profil] and "Logout".

You land on the Notifications [Benachrichtigungen] page, subtitled with a line explaining that you can configure which notifications you want to receive in the web application or by email.

2. Decide per event: email and/or in-app

Under "General notifications" [Allgemeine Benachrichtigungen] you see a list of every available event with two toggle columns:

  • Email [E-Mail] — you receive an email at the address stored on your account.
  • In the web application [In der Web-Anwendung] — the notification appears in the bell menu at the top right of ContractHero.

Flip each toggle on or off individually, per event and per channel. Changes take effect immediately — there is no Save button to click.

3. Control every notification with one click

At the very top of the list sits "All notifications" [Alle Benachrichtigungen] as a master toggle. Use it to switch every event on or off in one go — handy when you need an hour of quiet, or when you want to switch everything on once as your default.

4. See your in-app notifications

Inside the application, your current notifications live behind the bell icon at the top right, next to your name. A number on the bell shows how many entries are unread.

Which events can you switch on?

ContractHero currently distinguishes more than 25 individual events under "General notifications" [Allgemeine Benachrichtigungen]. Here they are, grouped:

The exact list in your own account can vary depending on which features are active — backup, webhooks, approval rules.

Common questions

Are my settings per user or per account?
Per user. Everyone in your organisation has their own notification settings, and one person's configuration has no effect on anyone else's.

Do my settings take effect immediately?
Yes. As soon as you flip a toggle, the new setting is active. There is no separate Save button.

Which email address do notifications go to?
The address you sign in to ContractHero with. If you want a different one, change it under "Profile" [Profil] in the same dropdown.

Where do I find in-app notifications?
Behind the bell icon at the top right, next to your name. A red number on the bell shows how many notifications are unread.

What happens to notifications I miss?
In-app notifications stay in the bell menu until you open them. Emails arrive in your inbox as usual — if a notification does not reach you, check your spam and junk folders too.

Can I receive notifications only for certain contract categories?
At the moment the configuration is global per event and cannot be filtered by category. In practice, people who only want notifications from their own area of responsibility achieve this through role permissions: you only receive events for contracts your role gives you access to.

Will I get notifications about contracts I am not allowed to see?
No. Even when an event is switched on, your role and team permissions still apply: notifications only ever cover contracts your role gives you access to.

Good to know

  • The master toggle is a useful emergency brake. If you want no notifications for a set period — a workshop, a focus hour — switch "All notifications" [Alle Benachrichtigungen] off briefly and back on afterwards. Far quicker than flipping every setting individually.
  • Email and in-app together is usually too much. Most users do best with in-app for all events and email only for the genuinely critical ones: failed signatures, approval requests, tasks assigned to them. That keeps the inbox clean.
  • Contract reminders are the most important event. If you switch on one thing, make it "Contract reminder" [Erinnerung an Vertrag] — that is the safety net that stops notice periods being missed.
  • Think about the bell when someone covers for you. Colleagues standing in for you do not receive your emails, but they do see in-app notifications once they are signed in to their own account. For cover arrangements, assigning a task to the stand-in works better than relying on notifications alone.
