Word add-in: create contracts directly from Microsoft Word

Contracts are often drafted in Microsoft Word — but they are filed and managed in ContractHero. The "ContractHero for Word" add-in connects the two worlds: you save your finished Word document as a PDF in ContractHero directly from within Word — no export, no second upload, no loss of formatting.

Your benefits

  • No switching between systems. Finish the document, one click — and the contract is in ContractHero. No downloading, no manual uploading, no copy-and-paste.
  • Formatting is preserved. Your Word document is converted automatically into a clean PDF — including all of its formatting.
  • The AI starts work straight away. After the upload, contract analysis starts automatically and fills in the contract fields — exactly as with any other upload route.
  • Create a new contract or link to an existing one. Straight from Word you either create a new contract or attach the document to an existing contract in your organisation.
  • Made for people who write a lot of contracts. Ideal for legal, procurement, finance and operations teams that draft contracts in Word and manage them in ContractHero.

How it works

1. Install the add-in

You will find the add-in as "ContractHero for Word" in the Microsoft AppSource Store: ContractHero for Word on AppSource. Alternatively, use the ribbon in Word: browse the add-ins [Add-Ins durchsuchen] and search for "ContractHero". Your IT department can also roll the add-in out centrally for the whole organisation.

2. Sign in

Open the ContractHero sidebar in Word and sign in with your ContractHero credentials. Important: signing in only works if the Word add-in has been enabled for your organisation.

3. Create a contract or link a document

In the sidebar you choose whether to create a new contract (with contract name [Vertragsname], category [Kategorie] and team [Team]) or to add the document to an existing contract.

4. Upload with a single click

The add-in converts your Word document into a PDF automatically and saves it in ContractHero. The AI analysis takes over immediately afterwards and fills in the contract fields.

Frequently asked questions

What does the add-in cost?
The add-in itself is available free of charge in AppSource — there is no in-app purchase. It does require an active ContractHero subscription in which the Word add-in has been enabled for your organisation.

I can't sign in — why is that?
First check whether the Word add-in is activated for your organisation. Anyone can install it from AppSource, but the connection to ContractHero only works once it has been enabled. Your account manager will be happy to help.

What happens to my formatting?
It is fully preserved. The add-in converts the document into a PDF that matches your Word layout exactly.

Does the add-in replace the contract templates in ContractHero?
No. The add-in complements the templates feature and has no effect on it whatsoever — you can use both alongside each other.

Is my original Word document kept?
Yes. Your .docx stays with you unchanged — the PDF version of the document is what gets stored in ContractHero.

Does the AI analysis also run for this upload route?
Yes. Contract analysis behaves exactly as it does for uploads through the web app: it starts automatically and fills in the fields of your contract.

Good to know

  • Who it is for: the add-in is provided for organisations, not for individual users — your IT department can distribute it centrally.
  • New contracts land in the team you select — when creating them, take care to choose the right team and category so that permissions apply correctly.
  • Mandatory fields still apply: as with every upload route, the rules defined in your field builder [Feldbaukasten] apply.
  • The add-in only reads the document that is open and transfers it to ContractHero in encrypted form.

Not using this feature yet, or would you like to get more out of it?
